PURPOSE:To effectively prevent detection of a fault caused by a skin characteristic, other that defects at the boundary between a part reflected by illuminating light and a part outside thereof, by applying an expansion and contraction processes to an image process. CONSTITUTION:An illumination device 23 and a CCD camera 24 traces a coating film 27 of a vehicle body 26 introduced into a painting checking station 20. Light from the illumination device 23 is reflected upon the coating film 27 and is then incident upon a camera 24. A robot device 21 moves the illumination device 23 and the camera 24 along the outer surface of the vehicle body 26, and delivers signals obtained by the camera 24 to an image processor 33 which therefore binarizes a picked-up image (video-signals), and thereafter subjects an image area including an illumination light reflected part and the boundary of the latter to an expansion process and contraction process, subsequently. Thereafter, of pixel areas which indicate defects on the coating surface 27, areas having pixels of a number which is less than a predetermined value are recognized as true defects. |
