A piezoelectric actuator (1) includes a plurality of linearly axially expandable hard piezoelectric rods (8) located between two plates (4 and 6) and are distributed about a central twistable core (2) fastened between the plates (4 and 6), with the axis of the rods (8) skew to the axis of the core (2), resembling a squirrel cage. The actuator (1) produces a twisting movement between the plates (4 and 6), responsive to voltage induced expansion of those piezoelectric rods (8). Fly by Wire aircraft control is realized with the actuator (1) in various systems providing all electric control of aerodynamic surfaces (9), including an electronic helicopter swashplate (25 and 27) by which the effective pitch of the main rotor blade (3) is controlled.
