The method involves stabilisation (101) of angular measurement determining (102) navigational parameters of antennae and (103) two acoustic velocity gradients. The depths of the sea bed and level of min. velocity, the velocities at these depths and at the surface, and the velocities at the depths of the acoustic source and observer are also calculated, along with resolution (104) of the instantaneous location parameters. Two rays are chosen (105) from among seven whose parameters are fixed. A weighted nonlinear least-squares criterion is minimised (106) and a residue test applied (107) to a soln. employing a fixed-delay model.
