Hf trifluoromethanesulphonate of formula Hf(OSO2CF3)4 (I) is new: Hf(OSO2CF4)4 (I) Also claimed is the prepn. of substd. aromatic cpds., where (I) is used in amt. of at most 1 mole-% w.r.t. the aromatic starting material. Further claimed is prepn. of (I) by reacting a Hf tetrahalide with CF3SO3H, pref. in 1:(4-10) molar ratio.
