The invention concerns an improved method of producing coloured natural or synthetic substrates by means of the following steps: (a) the substrate is contacted with a reactive coupling compound, (b) the coupling compound is fixed on the substrate by the formation of a chemical bond, (c) unfixed and hydrolysed coupling compound is removed, (d) the fixed coupling compound is reacted with a diazonium salt suitable for azo-dye formation, (e) excess diazonium compound is removed.
