A protector (5) is provided on one side of the grid (2) of the battery plate, which grid (2) comprises an expanded metal of copper or copper alloy electroplated with lead or lead alloy. This reduces risk of damage to the plating layer both generally, and when subsequently applying active material layer (3), so reduces dissolution of copper which otherwise would diminish effective operation of the battery. In production of the plate, plate lug (1) is advantageously connected by casting to the upper part of the copper expanded metal before lead or lead alloy is electroplated on the copper expanded metal, so as to achieve a more secure connection between plate lug (1) and grid (2), and further reduce risks of copper dissolution.
