Hydrophilic crosslinked copolymers based on N-vinyl-formamide (NVF) are obtd. by copolymerisation of a mixt. of (a) 5-95 wt.% NVF, (b) 95-5 wt.% (meth)acrylate ester(s) of formula (I) and/or (meth)acrylamide(s) (II) and/or vinylacetamide(s) (III) and (c) 0-30 wt.% N-vinylpyrrolidone, with (d) 0.05-10 wt.% crosslinker(s), and (e) 0.03-0.2 wt.% initiator(s), for 20-60 hrs. at 35-105 deg.C. R1 = H or Me. CH2=CR1-COOR2 (I) CH2=CR1-CO-NR2R3 (II) CH3-CO-NR-CH=CH2 (III) In (I): R2 = 1-25C aliphatic, araliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbyl, opt. substd. with OH gp(s); In (II): R2, R3 = H or opt. OH-substd. 1-6C alkyl; or R2 or R3 can also be H or OH, in which case the other gp. R3 or R2 can be 1-25C aliphatic, araliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbyl; R = H or 1-6C alkyl. Also claimed is the above process as such.
