Priority lookahead encoders

A method and device for determining an index address and an associativity address of a modified memory cell in a cache memory of a digital computer is disclosed. The method includes observing simultaneously several of the memory cells. From that observation, it is detected whether any of the memory cells are modified. For each memory cell that is modified, the index address and the associativity address corresponding the memory cells is output. The sequence in which the index address and associativity address is output if more than one memory cell is modified is prioritized so that only a single index address and address is output at a time.
