PURPOSE:To independently operate an image forming process forming an image on the image receiving layer of an intermediate transfer recording medium from a thermal transfer sheet and an image transfer process transferring the image to a receiving material from the intermediate transfer recording medium in a thermal transfer type image recording apparatus performing both processes in-line. CONSTITUTION:A buffer part C capable of regulating the length of an intermediate transfer recording medium is provided between an image forming part A transferring a colorant from the colorant layer of a thermal transfer sheet 1 to the image receiving layer of the intermediate transfer recording medium 2 to form an image and an image transfer part B transferring the image formed on the image receiving layer of the intermediate transfer recording medium to a receiving material 3 along with the image receiving layer. Even when the feed speed of the intermediate transfer recording medium is different between the image forming part A and the image transfer part B, an image forming process and an image transfer process can be parallelly performed at the same time.
