Coins are fed to a receiving basket (1) at a paying point and then pass through a counting and verification unit (2). A motor driven (26) distributor (5) sends the coins to either a safe (3) or to a buffer container (6) with a pre-locking compartment (7). Coins are fed by gravity to the pre-locking compartment (7) which has a motorised (13) outlet (12, 8) to the buffer container (6). Coins exit the buffer container (6) through a further motorised (16, 17) gate (9, 14) and conveyor (18) to a pneumatic transmission to remote coffers. The two motorised gates are always in opposite positions.
