This invention relates to a thin-film transistor type liquid crystal display device of low power consumption, which produces bright, high-quality images without causing cross-talk. The liquid crystal display device includes electrodes (3, 4) for applying an electric field substantially in parallel with a substrate surface, a liquid crystal composition (5), a device structure for obtaining a bright state and a dark state by polarization means, and driving means for outputting scanning signals having at least two non-selection voltages to scanning electrodes.
