Hederagenin derivatives represented by general formula (1) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, and a medicinal composition containing the same as the active ingredient and being efficacious in treating nephritis, wherein R<1> represents OR<11> or NR<11>R<12>, and R<11> and R<12> represent each independently hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted alkynyl, optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted heteroaryl; R<2> and R<3> represent each independently hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, optionally substituted alkynyl, optionally substituted acyl, optionally substituted monoalkylcarbamoyl, optionally substituted dialkylcarbamoyl or optionally substituted alkoxycarbonyl, or alternatively R<2> and R<3> are combined together to represent carbonyl.
