The proposed device is in the form of a belt worn around the waist and is intended for use as a personal lifesaving system. To improve the reliability of such a device and to ensure that it is always ready for use, without the need to recharge the compressed gas reservoir which forms part of the device, the compressed gas reservoir is designed as the clasp (2) of the belt, which is itseld formed by an inflatable unit (1). The clasp (2), whose interior space is filled with compressed gas, is in the form of a one-piece solid plastic unit. The section of the wall of the clasp (2) next to the inner cavity of the inflatable unit (1), which at one end has a sealed connection with the clasp, is narrower than elsewhere and can be broken by pressure applied to it through the wall of the inflatable unit (1). This section of the wall of the clasp (2) can be designed as an extension (3) within the inflatable unit (1) and provided with an annular narrow section (4). When this section of the wall of the clasp is broken, for example along the narrow section (4), the gas expands to fill the inflatable unit. The latter, when worn around the waist, can be "coiled" up along part of its length. The belt extends as the inflating gas straightens it out and can thus move up into the subject's armpit area.
