The holding element has retainers fitting in a groove round the wheel rim, in the form of projections (3) on the inside of the hub cap (1), with catching hooks (4) and a rearward-facing hook end (5) for fitting a retaining clip (6). The retaining clip can turn radially inwards on the catching hooks, and is supported on the hooks by spring elements (7) to hold it in the outward position. The hooks are chamfered towards the middle of the hub cap. The retaining clip has a corresponding recess (8) to receive the hooks, and a retaining edge (9) to grip the hook end from behind.
