The method for improving standby recovery in a phase locked loop involves disabling a reference counter, a loop counter, and a phase detector in response to an activation of a standby signal. Both the reference counter and the loop counter are enabled w.r.t. a deactivation of the standby signal. A voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) output signal is decoupled from an input of the loop counter on activation of a loop counter output signal, and is again coupled to the input of the loop counter in response to an activation of a reference counter output signal. The phase detector is then enabled. The disabling process involves disabling a loop counter comprising a prescaler and a loop counter.
