In order to minimize injury to the driver of a motor vehicle in the event of a collision, arms 4 from the hub 3 are provided beneath each of the flexible spokes 5 of a steering wheel 1 which, as the wheel is depressed, engage the spokes to set up a progressive increase in the spring tension rate of the spokes. The arms 4 may take various forms and may engage the spokes 5 only after a certain amount of movement thereof. Projections may be provided on the arms or 'spokes for engaging the cooperating member.
