PURPOSE:To obtain an optical waveguide device which enables accurate formation of fitting and connecting means to optical parts on the other side to be connected with good accuracy is capable of maintaining its accuracy over a long period of time, is strong to mechanical external force and is low in cost by providing coating members on both sides of an optical waveguide forming region with the fitting and connecting means used for connection of a waveguide chip. CONSTITUTION:Both sides holding the waveguide chip 15 where the optical waveguides 5 are formed are retreated and the entire part exclusive of the connecting end faces of the optical waveguides 5 of the waveguide chip 15 including these retreated parts 21 is covered by the covering member 18 formed of a synthetic resin, such as epoxy resin, having the toughness higher than the toughness of the waveguide chip 15. The reinforced parts 25 reinforced with the covering member 18 on both sides of the regions where the optical waveguides 5 are formed are provided with positioning and fitting pins 6 functioning as the fitting and connecting means 23 for connection the waveguide chip 15. Then, the fitting pins 6 are disposed with good accuracy at all times in the adequate positions inscribing the guide groove 8 of the waveguide chip 15. The cost of the optical waveguide device 1 is thus reduced. |
