PURPOSE:To specify a retrieving object based upon parental relation and grandparental relation among constitutional elements, to instruct to extract a specific part as a retrieved result and to simultaneously specify plural retrieving objects. CONSTITUTION:Since an inquiry editor 11 is provided with a instruction means 114 and a connection condition specifying means 116, parental or grandparental relations among document constitutional elements in a structured document can be specified. A retrieval expression generating part 14 and a retrieval expression evaluating part 15 prepare a retrieval condition based upon instructions outputted from the means 114, 116 and retrieves document data stored in a data base 16 based upon the retrieval condition. The editor 11 is also provided with an extracting object specifying part 115, so that a specific part in structured document constitutional elements can be specified and plural retrieving objects can be simultaneously specified.
