A process for mfg. a carbon packing and distribution element for use with fluids involves: (i) milling grain and mixing the milled prod. with a binder to form a plastic cpd.; (ii) creating a preform with similar dimensions to the final prod.; (iii) hardening and drying the preform before carbonising, pref. in an oxygen free atmos. A packing and distribution element made from grain is claimed as is a use of the element in process equipment for material and heat exchange between fluids.
