The identity card has an image section (BL) containing a photograph of the card holder, obtained by burning image spots of different light absorption level into a cover layer (1) and/or an intermediate layer (2) of the card using a laser. A colour section (BF) is applied in register with the image section using a colour transfer process, the image section providing the grey or black image sections and the colour section having no grey or black sections.
