The brakes of a car are operated electrically using a linear motor (3) which moves a sliding shaft (1) carrying a brake pad (9) against the brake disc (6). The motor has a tubular stator (12) and a magnetostrictive thrust rod as the rotor shaft. The end of the shaft facing the brake disc is a section (7) of steel or similar ductile material.
