The invention concerns a method and device for gas-filling an intermediate cavity between two glass panes (1 and 3) of a pane-shaped insulating glass unit with a spacer frame (2) placed between the panes and provided with primary seals, in a press for joining the two panes (1 and 3) with a sealed connection. The panes are mounted parallel to each other on press faces (8, 9); one of the panes is provided with the spacer frame (2), and the two panes are joined by moving the press faces together as the spacer frame (2) is inserted, the filler gas (10) being introduced before the press faces close together completely along the bottom edge of the panes (1 and 3) via a slit (11) between the spacer frame (2) and the pane (3) which faces it. The slit (11) between the spacer frame (2) and opposite pane (3) is sealed along both perpendicular pane faces by sealing means on the press side to prevent filler gas (10) from leaking.
