Refuse combustion chamber with roller grate and adjustable seals

The grate has a parallel array of hollow cylindrical rotating rollers (2), each roller having holes (8) in its wall (7) permitting air and/or gas to pass through upwards to the combustion zone. The spaces between adjacent rollers have stationary strips (9), mounted on a vertical body (10), for reducing the amount of combustion material falling through. To prevent combustion mixture passing between the rollers, the roller surfaces slide over stationary spring-loaded sealing strips (14). Each seal is held on a bracket (19) supported by a tube (22) running parallel to the rollers. Adjustment of spring pressure is by a screw (24) in a threaded hole on an arm (23) mounted on the bracket and acting on the vertical body (10). Locknuts (26) hold the screw setting.
