Data compression is effected on arbitrary high entropy digitized data by compression and entropy transformation in an iterative system. Compression (12) includes nonlinear addressing. Entropy transformation (14) may involve any of a number of techniques to reorder distribution of data for testing (16) to determine if the newly ordered data are compressible. Among the techniques are a merge technique, a swapping technique and various arithmetic modification techniques. |
