<p>A method and apparatus for producing colored glass includes the steps of diverting a stream of clear molten glass from at least one glass melting furnace (4, 6) through one or more transport channels (18, 20) to a color treatment chamber (8). Recycled cullet and color additive are added to a charging end (5) of treatment chamber (8). Treatment chamber (8) is heated to melt the cullet and heat the remaining feedstock to form a molten bath of colored glass which is thermally and chemically homogenized in the treatment chamber (8). Rotary paddle wheels (62, 64) in transport channels (18, 20) regulate the flow rate and level of molten glass and provide for selective shut off of individual glass streams. Glass level sensor (50), located in an outlet channel (23) of treatment chamber (8), is coupled to a controller (M) to regulate the rotational speed of paddle wheels (62, 64) responsive to glass level fluctuations to maintain controlled gob weights of glass supplied to the glassware forming machines (16, 17).</p> |
