<p>Apparatus for separating and boxing such items as envelopes. A continuous horizontal stack (2, seen in plan) of envelopes on edge travels on conveyor (4) and has certain envelopes indexed out sideways to delineate sets of envelopes requiring separation for boxing. A clamp (5) engages an indexed envelope after sensing it then differential movement between conveyor and clamp opens up a gap between the indexed article and the downstream envelopes. A sweep arm (12) now engages the separated downstream envelopes (1) and moves them onto a table for boxing. The table has a support bed (30) and end plates (31, 32) to compress the set of envelopes. Friction reducing means on the end plates (e.g. compressed air) facilitate removal of the envelope set from the compression table upon inversion.</p> |
