The system is used to provide index prints of reduced size for each set of copies, printed next to one another along the copy material web. The printing of the copies and the index prints is effected via separate exposure stations, offset from one another in the transport direction of the copy material web, with the light quantity used for printing the index print determined from the exposure at the copy printing station. The transport of the copy material web is controlled so that the latter is fed to the index print exposure station after printing the last copy in the set, with the printing of further copies prevented until a long enough copy material web for all the index prints is supplied.
