Process for purifying waste gases from an industrial process and for treatment of residues from the industrial process, including residues from waste gas purificn. comprises (1) a first stage in which soluble pollutants are removed from the waste gases and residues to form liq. effluents, (2) a second stage in which the liq. effluents from (1) are treated to obtain a purified salt soln. and solid residues, and (3) a third stage in which the salts in the purified salt soln. from (2) are converted to the corresp. acids and bases. The acids and bases from (3) are used (a) to neutralise acidic and/or basic constituents of the waste gases (b) to provide the acid and/or base requirements of stage (2), and (c) in other industrial processes.
