A method for the control of the transverse profiles of a web (W) manufactured by means of a machine for the manufacture of a web material, such as a board or paper machine, and/or treated by means of a finishing machine. In the method, the transverse caliper and grammage profiles (cp, bp) and/or the moisture profile of the web (W) is/are measured. The actuators (44, 54, 47, 47a, 47b) acting upon said profiles are regulated by means of these signals (m3, m4) of measurement. In view of optimizing the quality of the web (W) to be produced, the reel formation, and the runnability of the machine, in the method, the transverse tension profile (tp) of the web (W) to be manufactured and/or treated is measured. Based on the measurement of the tension profile (tp), set profiles (s2, s3, s4) are formed, by whose means one or several actuators (12, 13, 14; 36, 44, 54, 61) of the profile regulation are controlled.
