In a driving apparatus in a sewing machine in which a motor lever 62 is operated so that a clutch plate 61 integral with a motor shaft 58 carrying an output pulley 59 is pushed against either a flywheel 55 integral with the rotor 52 of a main motor or a rotary member 65 which is rotatable around the motor shaft and to which the rotation of an auxiliary motor 75 is applied, an auxiliary brake device 81 is provided which directly brakes the rotary member 65 to stop it. The auxiliary motor 75 may be coupled to the rotary member 65 either by worm gearing 66, 71 or by a toothed belt. The brake device 81 comprises a brake pad 82 actuated by a solenoid or air or hydraulic cylinder 87. <IMAGE>
