The tappet has a cylindrical skirt (15) closed by a cap (4) upon which the cam operates. Beneath the caps lower face (5) is a play eliminating element (6) which is supported by a cylindrical sleeve (11) formed on the lower portion of a funnel shaped guide (8) produced from thin sheet metal or plastics fixed to the inner face (9) of the skirt. Above the guide and beneath the cap is an oil chamber to feed the play eliminator. An orifice (13) in the skirt connects with a thin-walled pipe (17) which passes through the guide and exits near the top cap. This pipe feeds oil to the chamber.
