A variable voltage controller or fader has an electrically resistive strip (4) along which a finger can be moved, either in direct contact therewith or closely adjacent. A signal (1a) coupled into the strip produces voltages (V1, V2) at opposite ends, and when a finger is present, it provides a leakage path which modifies those voltages. The relative amount by which they are modified can provide a control signal related to the finger position. Subsequent removal of the finger leaves the condition unchanged, and indicators (12) can show the erstwhile finger position and enable smooth resumption of control.
