A process for producing N-protected N-alkylated amino acids of formula (I) is described in which the components have the meaning given in the description. In the process, to a compound of formula (II) is added a solution of potassium-tert.-butanolate in a non-proteinic organic solvent and then a C1-2-alkyl halide is added.
