The tappet has a hollow cylindrical skirt (2) which with its outer surface (10) moves axially within a cylinder head bore (11). One end is closed by an integral disc shape cap (4) above which is a drive disc (5) which is in contact with the valve drive cam. Below the cap and running around the circumference of the skirt there is an inward-projecting pressed groove (9) which acts to stiffen the relatively thin-walled skirt. To provide further rigidity at the open end of the skirt the edge (7) is formed with a small inward projecting flange.
