A method for biometric authentication of an individual amongst a very large quantity of individuals, with an authentication system storing a set of reference information, each associated with one of those individuals, comprising the steps of: the individual to be authenticated providing authentication biometric information; and searching amongst the reference information stored by the authentication system for reference information corresponding to the individual to be authenticated, according to the authentication biometric information. The reference information is distributed in a plurality of sub--databases, and the individual to be authenticated provides, in addition to the biometric information, an identifier forming the addressing information, designating at least one of the sub-databases likely to contain the reference information representative of the individual to be authenticated, in such a way that the step of searching is carried out over a subset of the set of reference information, identified by that addressing information. When reference information for a new individual is added to the system, the sub--database best adapted to store that reference information is selected according to a criterion of maximising a distance in relation to the reference information already present in the sub-database.
