Starting cover for turbo=machine casing

The starting cover is fitted between the free ends of the running scoops (3) and the casing (1) of the compressor or turbine of a turbo-machine. The cover is formed from a carrier (7) and bundles of fibres (5) fixed at the perimeters of the casing. The free ends of the fibres (10) face inwards from the carrier. The carrier is a woven silicon carbide mat. The mat threads are perpendicular to each other. The ceramic fibres pass around both crossing threads at the knot points to form the apex (6). The cover fits in an annular carpet around the casing (1), possibly in one or more grooves (2).
