PURPOSE:To provide a new compound having a strong growth inhibitory effect on cancer cells of a mouse or a human and also on HIV. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R is H, a lower alkyl, a lower alkanoyl or benzoyl). This compound can be obtained by culturing a microorganism belonging to Actinoplanes and capable of producing the compound of formula II or its variant, collecting the compound of formula II from the cultured solution or the cell bodies and, if necessary, conducting alkylation, alkanoylation or benzoylation thereof. In addition, the culture is carried out at 27 to 37 deg.C and pH 4 to 8 for 72 to 360 hr preferably according to the shake culture method or the submerged aeration agitation culture method by using glucose, maltose, etc., as the carbon source, soybean meal, corn steep liquor, etc., as the nitrogen source and calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, etc., as the inorganic salt. |
