Measurements are made of characteristics of components and sub-assemblies of the pumping and injection nozzle unit 14 before full assembly and then the dimensions of certain components are selected so that the injection timing and delivery quantity in response to actuation of the control solenoid valve meet desired values. The steady flow and opening pressure of the injection nozzle sub-assembly, the force of the spring (56, Fig.3) biasing the solenoid valve 34, the clearance between the valve and its guide sleeve (52) and the force exerted by the solenoid 36 on its armature (38) may be measured. Based on these measurements a shim 50 determining the lift of the valve 34 and components which determine the gap between the solenoid 36 and its armature may be selected.
