A method and apparatus for optimizing operation of a filter system (10) supplying filtered fluid to a process system (14) characterized by varying demands for filtered fluid, a pump (16) being operable at a varying flow rate for supplying fluid to the inlet conduit (18) of the filter system (10) and developing a supply of filtered fluid through conduit (12) for the process system (14), a selected parameter of the process system (14) indicative of its demands being sensed in order to generate feedback data, regulating operation of the first pump (16) to supply fluid to the filter system (10), whereby the filter system (10) operates at a variable rate in proportion to the demands of the process system (14). Operation of the pump (16) is preferably regulated by adjusting either its operating speed or volumetric stroke. A parameter for the processing system may include level of fluid in a holding tank (42) between the filter system (10) and the processing system (14). The introduction by bodyfeed of filter aids from first and second sources (22) and (24) to filter elements (10F) in the filter system (10) is also regulated.
