Polyvinyl chloride compositions containing a plasticiser such as di-2-ethylhexyl-phthalate are stabilised against deterioration by light and heat by addition of a hydrocarbon-tin mixed salt of a monocarboxylic acid and malic acid of formula <FORM:0751499/IV(a)/1> where R is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical and R1 is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical (see Group IV (b)). Specified compounds are bis-(dibutyl-tin monolaurate) maleate, bis-(diphenyl-tin monolaurate) maleate, bis-(dibutyl-tin monoacetate) maleate and bis-(dibutyl-tin monobehenate) maleate.ALSO:The invention comprises hydrocarbon-tin mixed salts of monocarboxylic aliphatic acids and maleic acid. They may be of the general formula <FORM:0751499/IV(a)/1> where R is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, lauryl, phenyl, benzyl) and R1 is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical (derived from acetic, butyric, caproic, lauric, palmitic, oleic and behenic acids). The compounds of the invention may be prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon-tin oxide with a mixture of maleic acid or maleic anhydride and a monocarboxylic aliphatic acid. The relative proportions may be stoichiometric, but it is preferred to use a slight excess of the monocarboxylic acid and correspondingly less of the maleic acid. Reaction may be carried out at temperatures slightly above 100 DEG C. to remove water of reaction, or at lower temperatures with subsequent heating, or in the presence of a solvent such as benzene or toluene. The products may be used as stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride and other chlorine-containing synthetic resins (see Group IV (a)) as rubber accelerators and anti-oxidants, lubricating oil additives and polymerization accelerators. The examples describe the preparation of bis-(dibutyltin monolaurate) maleate, bis-(dibutyltin monoacetate) maleate, and bis-(dibutyltin monobehenate) maleate and bis-(diphenyltin monolaurate) maleate.ALSO:Hydrocarbontin mixed salts of a monocarboxylic acid and maleic acid of general formula R1COO.Sn(R2)OOC.CH = CH.COO.Sn(R2) OOC.R1 where R is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical and R1 is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic radical (see Group IV(b)) are used as rubber vulcanization accelerators and anti-oxidants. Specified compounds are bis (dibutyltin monolaurate) maleate, bis (diphenyltin monolaurate) maleate, bis (dibutyltin monoacetate) maleate and bis (dibutyltin monobehenate) laurate. |
