The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0839972/IV (b)/1> wherein n = 2 or 3 together with mixtures of the isomers and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting 3-isopropylphenol with chlorine or a substance liberating chlorine (e.g. sulphuryl chloride), and if desired heating the products at the end of the reaction to an elevated temperature to remove by-products. Examples include the preparation and isolation of monochloro-3-isopropyl phenols.ALSO:Bactericidal and germicidal compositions comprise as active ingredient one or more nuclear di- or tri-chloro-3-isopropyl phenols and an inert carrier. The phenols may be emulsified in soap solutions. Examples disclose liquids made up in the same manner as Liquor Chloroxylenolis B.P. 1948 but using in place of chloroxylenol (A) a mixture of 2- and 6-monochloro-, (B) 4-monochloro-, (C) trichloro-, (D)-(F) mixed dichloro-, (G) mixed dichloro- and trichloro-3-isopropyl phenols.
