The internal surfaces of the vehicle walls (20) are cooled by passing an air flow (V) across them, with simultaneous controlled vaporisation of a liquid in the immediate region of the wall surface. The latent heat of vaporisation of the liquid lowers the temperature of the wall surface and the moving sheet of air adjacent to it.The liquid is sprayed in a fine droplet screen from a series of injector nozzles (22) arranged along the length of the air flow path, supplied from a pressurised liquid source (A). The flow rate of the liquid is controlled between the source and the nozzle in relation to the temperature and relative humidity of the air flow into which it is to be injected.
