Improvements in or relating to the production of gas

In a continuous process for the production of combustible gases from gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons, e.g. oils, crude tars or refinery gases, a stream of a gas comprising a recycled part of the final product and steam is indirectly heated, e.g. by passage through a heated vessel containing chequerbrick, thereby to effect a reaction between the recycled gas and the steam, the resulting gas being then passed into a chamber and carburetted by introducing a gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon to produce a gas having the desired composition. In the apparatus shown duplicate gas-producing units which are used alternately are provided, each comprising a regenerator 1 or 11 in which the recycled gas is reacted with steam, a chamber 2 or 21 in which the gas from the regenerator 1 or 11 is carburetted and gas washers 4 or 41 in which the product gas is cooled and leaves containing water vapour corresponding to saturation at 80‹ C. thereby providing the steam for the reaction in the regenerator 1 or 11. The product gas is also passed at a temperature of about 90‹ C. through a detarrer 5 and part is recycled by line 8 to regenerator 1 or 11 while the remainder is washed in a washer 7 and withdrawn at 15. The gas-producing unit not being used for gas-making is reheated by combusting a fuel such as the tar separated in vessels 4, 41, 5 and 7 in the chamber 2 or 21, the waste combustion gases passing through the regenerator 1 or 11 leave by line 14.
