The invention relates to a cutting insert for machining, especially milling, with a chip area comprising recesses which are arranged continuously along the cutting edge (12) and deform the chips transversely to the flow direction so that the recesses (13, 14) widen into regions away from the cutting edge as far as their rear end (133, 143) in a preferably linearly conical manner, and between a cutting corner (10) and the first recess (13) there is a rib-like projection (18) with a longitudinal axis which is arranged parallel to or forms the first borderline (132) of the recess nearest the cutting edge.
