A gondola rack stocking system (10) that includes a rack (11) having a base (14), a plurality of vertical standards (15) spaced along the base and configured to support gondola shelves (17) on gondola shelf brackets (18) thereon is combined with a high density subassembly (12) that includes a pair of horizontal rails (35, 36) connectable to vertical rectangular frame uprights (33), preferably in fixed lengths corresponding to the spacing of the standards. The vertical rectangular frame uprights (33) connect at any of a plurality of positions along the rails (35, 36) and also at their bottoms to the foot of the rack base (14). Variable width shelf sets (57, 58) are connectable at vertically spaced positions on the uprights (33) and at the top of the uprights (33). Conventional gondola rack shelving (17) supplements the shelves to optimize the flexibility of the system configuration. Maximum packout is thereby provided.
