A security label (1) has a bar code (2) printed on the outer surface of am outer layer (6) which is permanently bonded to an inner layer (7). A pull tab (3) defined in the material of the outer and second layers (6 and 7) is joined to a detachable portion (4) extending across the length of the label (1) whereby removal of the pull tab (3) will tear out the detachable portion (4) to prevent recognition of the optically readable pattern.
