The invention relates to water-free and water-containing agents for waterproofing leather and hides which contain a silicon and, as emulsifier, an alkyl polyalkylol ether carboxylic acid and/or alkylaryl polyalkylol ether carboxylic acid and/or one of their alkaline, alkaline earth, ammonium, amine or alkanol amine salts, and the use of these agents for waterproofing, preferably during or after retanning. A post-treatment with metal salts of di to tetravalent cations may be conducted following waterproofing.
