The invention relates to an automated information system for use within the livestock industry. The system receives, stores and supplies data of the livestock company relating to the animals of the company. The system can process data in the field of feeding, milk production, milking performance, temperature, behaviour, weight and electrical conductivity of the milk for each animal. A characteristic of the system is that these data are used in order to determine the probability that the animal has a specific physical condition and that not only the aforementioned data are taken into consideration in this determination, but also data which play a part in determining the prior probability of the physical condition. In terms of the combination of the different factors, use is made of a Causal Probability Network (CPN), a method which enables reasoning with uncertain and incomplete knowledge. The system is supplied once only (initially) in terms of knowledge. It is then possible for the system to refine the knowledge by verifying the calculations through counter-checking. The system can thus help monitor productivity and animal health and obviate the consequences of the occurrence of specific diseases.
