The invention relates to a T-lymphotropic primate virus L (PTLV-L) in substantially isolated form to be obtained from the lymphocyte cell line Pt1969 with the ATCC number ATCC CRL 11592 and recombinant or nonrecombinant or synthetic polypeptides, comprising at least one PTLV-L epitope. The invention further comprises PTLV-L polynucleotides or the complementary strands thereof, monoclonal antibodies directed against a PTLV-L epitope, various vaccines for treating PTLV-L infection, kits for analysing samples with respect to the presence of polynucleotides, antigens or antibodies derived from PTLV-L.
