PURPOSE: To provide a method for separating hydrocarbon bases from mixtures of hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons. CONSTITUTION: A method of reactive separation of mixtures containing hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons comprises substantially the following steps: a step to produce lower molecular weight products in water from mixtures of hydrocarbons selected from the group of C2 -C26 hydrocarbons and their mixtures and oxygenated hydrocarbons selected from the group of C2 -C40 oxygenated hydrocarbons and their mixtures and a step to form a liquid layer containing water soluble reaction products and an organic layer containing primarily hydrocarbons.
